Only the older people of the Grays Thurrock area will remember Henry Griggs. He was one of many affected by shell shock during the First World War. As can be seen from the above photograph and inscription he lived at No. 105 in the Old High Street. He was for a time so I have been informed, and presumably after the war, a PT. instructor aboard either the T.S. Warspite or the T.S. Exmouth. The photograph of Henry was sent to me by Patricia Hartlebury, now living in Spain, given to her by Henry as a wedding gift- many thanks Patricia. "I remember old Henry well as unfortunately I was one of the kids who used to make fun of him, until my dad ticked me off and explained what shell shock was. Henry used to march up and down the High Street, very smart in his uniform and beret like Monty (Field Marshall Montgomery). He would talk out loud and occasionally turn and fire his imaginary rifle. He would often have a bunch of kids marching behind him."- Gino Reeve, now living in Australia. What happened to Henry I wonder? Obviously he has long since passed away, Did he marry? Are there any children and grandchildren? If anyone has further information on Henry I would love to hear from you via my Guestbook. |
