Old High Street, Grays Census 1851.

The Theobald Arms.

Foreword from Ross Bannister, Grays. (who provided the census information).

I don't know why the Census Enumerator used different numbers after The Anchor & Hope but No 7 High Street North does state THEOBALD ARMS and also the tenant at No 8, Jabez Letch, figures again in 1891, again next door to the Theobalds!

The numbers obviously changed sometime between 1881 and 1891. The '91 numbers show the Old High Street as a continuation of the whole High Street i.e. The Queens Hotel was No1 with odd numbers running south through the railway line and down to Argent Street.
My GG Grandfather moved from the Dutch House sometime after 1851, left his trade as a Bargeman, Lighterman & Waterman and became the Publican of the Original Pub on the corner of the High Street called the Old Green Man & Bell. This was later demolished to make way for the Queens Hotel where he was the landlord until just before the fire there in September 1890.
