The Rev. Frank Jennings known as the "Tramps Parson" was awarded the MBE in 1984 at the age of 94 for his work with the homeless and alcoholics. Frank was born and bred in Grays at William St.

     He Lived at the time of his honour from the Queen in a Salvation Army Hostel in Surrey, having given away to good causes more than £80,000 in money and property.

 

    At his investiture he said "I gave it all away as there are no banks in heaven, I have always tried to live for the community".

    One of the highlights of his colourful life was to travel with George Orwell and recorded all his travels in 17 books and 2 manuscripts.

       He always maintained that his ministry was " outside the pulpit". He preached in Siberia and in New York's "Skid Row". For his work among American hobo's he was created a member of the American Legion of Honour.
