Most of the original buildings in the Old High Street have now unfortunately been demolished. It was possible at one time to visit no fewer than 8 public houses all within a short walk from here, the pub on the right of the 1934 picture is the Bull Inn (a Seabrooke establishment) and to the left is the Kings arms (Ind Coope), |
The 1914 picture, looking south towards the River Thames shows the Kings Arms in better detail, the area in front of the Kings Arms, forming the junction with New Road was, up until the late 1960's the site of Grays open market which has now after many years absence been re-established on certain days of the week in the "new" High Street. The Bull Inn was demolished in 1970 and a housing, development was erected in its place, a block of flats now stand on the site of the Kings Arms, the Rising Sun having been left standing, along with the building of the former Perrings furniture shop. The 1912 picture shows a group of mainly children posing for the camera and is looking north with the River Thames behind, it is regrettable that more of the Old High was not preserved for future generations to see and enjoy especially the weather boarded houses, an opinion held by many older inhabitants of Grays is that this part of the town at least should have remained intact.
