The Market, Grays.

|
This picture from the mid 1960's shows the market which stood for many years at the junction of the Old High St. and New Road. The public House in the centre of the picture, demolished in the late 1970's is the King's Arms. The market has been re-established in Grays in the "New" High St. north of the level crossing. |

"The picture of the market only shows a fraction of it. That particular section was the fruit and vegetable barrow boys. To the left behind Joyes the market continued and included many shops a la Petticoat lane. It was a delightful area with vendors selling a variety of goods including butcher shops which I believe also included horse meat. Directly at the entry there was a food stall on the left, Bill’s food stall if I remember rightly, one penny for a thick cut slice of bread and jam, three pence for a bag of chips, (before they were called French fries) and right down the back was Tom Bebe’s shop which apart from being a clothing shop, was also where the men folk, including my father, used to get together to play poker".
