Grays Railway Station.

The first picture shows the original Grays Railway Station which has since been rebuilt on the same site and of much the same size.

The railway service came to Thurrock in the late 1800's, the company being the London, Tilbury and Southend, the line ran from Fenchurch Street to Southend. The London, Tilbury and Southend Company were taken over by the Midland Railway Company in 1912. To the left is the "up" side towards London (west) and towards Tilbury to the right.

The level crossing has now of course been replaced with automatic gates but up until the early 1970's was manually operated from the signal box just visible to the right of the picture taken from a postcard and dated 1913. The photograph below is of a train preparing to leave Grays Station toward Tilbury
