Thurrock Gazette dated May 29th 1981. This was the moment the whole of Thurrock had waited for........when the Queen and Prince Philip arrived for their visit to Grays. And despite the torrential rain, thousands had turned out to greet the Royal couple for their historic tour. Crowds started forming in Grays town center from mid morning and kept up their humour for the hours of waiting. |

The
Duke had a friendly wave for the many onlookers who packed upstairs
office windows to catch a glimpse of the Royal couple.
Ignoring the rain the couple went "walkabout" on either side of the road between the War Memorial and the Thameside Theatre. Army bomb squad experts were called in to search the boroughs finance department's in Grays on the morning of the Royal visit after two bomb threats. All staff were evacuated but were allowed back inside when it was given the all clear in time for the Queen's visit.
